Travel to Rovinj, Croatia

You’ll most likely fly to Pula Airport, it is {about|approximately} 40 kilometers south of Rovinj – to transfer there, take a bus from the airport to the main bus station in Pula and then another bus to Rovinj. For more options, you could fly to Trieste or Venice Airport and then transfer from there over to Rovinj. Traveling to either of these towns may be a good choice if you’re flying out of season (in winter or spring months), or even in the high summer season and you’d like more flight opportunities.

Top 5 things to do in Rovinj

1. Visit the old town of Rovinj
The old town of Rovinj is the protected historic center of Rovinj, the most attractive area of the town for tourists. The slim cobbled streets and the tiny plazas that have experienced the fierce past of the town are filled with ancient, medieval, gothic and baroque facilities and balconies. On the northern edge, you will discover the ruins of the walls which used to secure the town's residents from conquistadors and plunderers. Strolling down the aged streets is a quite unique adventure. The most significant monument in the town of Rovinj, the Church of St. Euphemia is a Venetian Baroque structure reconstructed between the 1725 and 1736. The campanile was built by the Milanese designer Alessandro Monopola, a reproduction of the Church of St. Mark in Venice. The list of private accommodation in Old town can be found here.

2. Baron Gautsch wreck
The splendid traveler ship Baron Gautsch is one of the most fascinating Adriatic wreck spots. Only 2 years after the tragedy of Titanic (1914), this passenger ship shared a less known, but similarly terrible tale of human carelessness and a series of ill-fated coincidences. "Baron Gautsch" was a passenger boat of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, constructed in 1908 and was titled after the Chancellor baron Gautsch. She was the ship on a routine service along the shoreline between Kotor and Trieste. These days the ship lies on a sandy bottom at the depth of 40m, few miles SW of the lighthouse St. Ivan.

3. Visit St. Catherine's and Red Island
St. Catherine and Red Island are just off the shore of the old town. St. Catherine Island is much smaller of the two, and it is closer to the coast. It takes only 5 min boat ride to reach it. The boat runs every half an hour in high season. Beaches on this island are mainly pebbly and rocky. The only hotel on the island is Hotel Katarina, situated in a attractive park with stunning viewpoints over the old town. Red Island is the largest island away from the town's coastline and the most remote one. It takes 15 mins by ship to come to it. The Red Island actually consists of two islets: bigger one St. Andrews and a smaller sized island Maskin.

4. Visit Batana Museum
Batana is a traditional Rovinj boat, a piece of town's past and its residents. A couple of years ago Rovinj residents established a museum devoted to this classic boat. The museum is reasonably small, but it is absolutely well worth a visit.

5. Take an evening cruise on a traditional boat.
During the course of the summer season, every single Tuesday and Thursday, you can schedule yourself on a unique Batana evening. It will take you around Rovinj's peninsula. The night will carry on in a traditional Rovinj tavern with an evening meal based on the regional goods: fresh fish and shellfish, local red or white wine and olive oil. This is an intriguing approach to enjoy local food and a local lifestyle.

How to find accommodation in Rovinj, Croatia

As elsewhere in Istria and Croatia, many Rovinj apartment owners expect you to stay for at least two or three nights. In high season, you may be expected to stay for seven nights, especially in private accommodation / apartments. Holiday apartments in Rovinj are typically a less expensive alternative to hotels, and the longer you stay the much more economic they eventually become. A holiday apartment is 'your home away from home' providing more living space, more seclusion and more flexibility than you receive with a hotel room. Remember that residing in an apartment reduces your overall cost of vacation as a result of the substantial prices reductions you can generate from eliminating hotel laundry washing costs (holidays of 7 days or more), room service, hotel dining establishments and overpriced internet expenses.
